Imphal, February 28 2011:
The Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC) Manipur has expressed strong displeasure with the manner BRTF is working on Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-53 .
Speaking to media persons at their MG Avenue office this afternoon, TDC general secretary Ng Haridas, while lambasting the way BRTF has been working on NH-53, demanded that the BRTF tender an apology to the people of Manipur for their failure to fulfil their own assurance of making Imphal-Jiribam highway motorable by the end of February this year.
The State Government should also keep a close watch on the way BRTF has been working and ensure that the 11 Kms long stretch between milestones of 136 Kms and 147 Kms from Imphal is made motorable by March before the onset of rainy season.
Observing the pathetic condition of the highway which is quite incompatible with the money sanctioned for development of NH-53, the TDC, in the interest of the people of Manipur, filed a PIL against BRTF.

But Government advocate has been repeatedly putting off hearing of the PIL as if the Government is favouring BRTF.
Taking strong exception to such attitude of the Government, Haridas said that the Government should submit a counter affidavit to Court at the earliest and extend all possible assistance with regard to this matter in the interest of the public.
The BRTF had made a public announcement that NH-53 would be motorable by the end of February this year, while maintaining that it would be upgraded to the status of a full fledged National Highway, complete with black topping with the bridges repaired.
The Transporters' and Drivers' Council had decided never to take the NH-39 route after the UNC imposed yet another indefinite blockade in protest against the decision of the Government to hold the election to the Autonomous District Council.
