Tamenglong, July 30 2010:
Nine girls belonging to Zeme sub-tribe of Zeliangrong community from Tamenglong district were rescued from a place called New Life Centre for Girls in Bangalore city of Karnataka.
The girls would be brought back home by officials of Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur and Child Welfare, Tamenglong soon.
The nine girls hailed from Aben village, Mandeu and Tousem village under Tousem police station of Tamenglong district.
The children between seven and 15 years were sent by their parents on being promised that they would be given free and good education.
But as such story usually goes, they were tortured and forced to work instead of providing free and good education, a well-placed source told this reporter.
The source refused to disclose the names of the nine girls.
The children left their homes three years back.
Now the girls are being looked after by government authority and they would be taken upto Guwahati.
They will start their journey back home from August 9, and the Social Welfare Department and the Child Welfare Committee, Tamenglong will receive them in Guwahati on August 12, the source said.
It is worth mentioning here that as many as 52 boys from Tousem sub-division of Tamenglong district were rescued by Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur and Child Welfare Committee, Tamenglong from Chennai, and were brought back home in February this year.
In the meantime, the Lungchum (Awangkhul) Village Authority informed this reporter that in Lungchum Primary School, five teachers have never attended the school since the beginning of this year.
The teachers are Head Master, Bamguang, assistant teachers Sabir, Premila, Keiringamang and Benjamin.
The Village Authority chairman K Sajinlung appealed to the authority concerned to immediately look into the matter.
