Imphal, January 18:
Even as the talk between the JAC Against the Killing of Simthar Tangkhul and L Govind and Injuring L Langamba and the Chief Minister broke down today with the JAC going ahead with its general strike and amid the growing demand for an impartial probe into the killing of IGP T Thangtuam, the State Cabinet which is scheduled to meet tomorrow is likely to discuss the possibility of handing over the cases to the CBI.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, a reliable source said that the Cabinet which is scheduled to meet tomorrow at 9 am is likely to discuss the possibility of handing over the North AOC killings and the assassination of IGP T Thangthuam to the CBI.
Two persons, L Govind and Simthar Tangkhul were killed while another civilian A Langamba was injured when unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate firing at North AOC at about 9.30 pm on December 31.IGP T Thangthuam and his escort commander were killed in an ambush by PLA at Oinam on October 31 in the morning.
The general strike which came into effect from midnight today is being supported by MSF, DESAM and AMSU to demand the Government to produce the killers of the two civilians.
Ahead of the Cabinet meeting tomorrow, Chief Minister O Ibobi today convened a meeting with the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary (Home) to discuss the intricacies of handing over the two cases to the CBI.
The Chief Minister also called on the Governor today at 5.30 pm and briefed him on the law and order situation.
Meanwhile the talk held between the JAC and the Chief Minister broke down today evening and the general strike came into force from midnight today.
The general strike will be in force till 6 pm tomorrow.
An 8 member JAC team led by its convenor K Suresh met the Chief Minister today for about half an hour, but the talk broke down.
Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh, IGP (LO) A Romenkumar, SP of Imphal West Clay Khongsai and SP of Imphal East Kailun were also present at the meeting.
Later speaking to newsmen outside the residence of the Chief Minister, Suresh said that since no solution could be arrived during the talk, the general strike will go ahead as scheduled and appealed to all to support the strike.
Recalling the meeting with the Chief Minister, Suresh said that on being asked about the progress of the investigation into the North AOC killing, the Chief Minister merely said that much progress has been made but gave nothing concrete.
The Chief Minister appealed to us to call off the proposed general strike but we made it clear that since the decision to impose the strike was taken in consultation with other organisations, the JAC alone cannot decide on the matter, said Suresh.
Explaining why only the JAC members met the CM today, Suresh said that they went to meet the CM on being invited at 3.30 pm today.
As there was time constraint, the other supporting organisations and student bodies could not be contacted or consulted, added the convenor of the JAC.
