Both the Assam Rifles authorities and the UNLF claimed to have inflicted casualties against each other during an encounter between troops of J&K Light Infantry and MPA cadres of the armed outfit that took place this morning at a remote location in Chandel district.
According to a statement issued by PRO (IGAR/S), troops of 10 JKLI launched an operation at Phaisangjang village last night leading to heavy exchange of gunfire from about 5 am today in which one Shanathoiba of the UNLF got killed while two cadres suffered injuries as the remaining UGs fled into Myanmar.
busting of two hideouts during subsequent searches of the encounter site led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle with magazine and 23 rounds, one remote controlled IED and seven normal IEDs, one radio set (wireless), huge quantity of rations, medicines, tentage and camp materials, maintained the statement adding that there was no casualty on the side of the security force.
However, a spokesperson of the UNLF earlier today contended that one security force personnel was slain in the gun-fight that lasted for about five hours adding that there is high possibility of some other wounded in the clash.
The claims could not be confirmed or authenticated as Molcham police station do not have telephone facility while communication with Moreh PS also failed due to technical failure of telephone line.
It takes about two hours on foot to reach Phaisangjang from Molcham.
Meanwhile, the PRO's release also informed of a team of 32 AR having apprehended a cadre of PULF (Azad) identified as Furquan (21) s/o Allaudin of Lilong Turel Ahanbi, yesterday.
One Chinese hand-grenade was recovered from the arrested Furquan, who had been handed over to Lilong police station today.
