Manipur celebrates players' day

Imphal, February 25 2015:
Manipur celebrated 'XVIth Shanaroishingee Numit 2015' (Sportspersons Day) with a grand function at Main Stadium of Khuman Lampak Sports Complex on Wednesday.
The celebration of the day was opened by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh by flagging off a 'Players' Run' which was participated by hundreds of sportspersons from different disciplines.
February 25 has been celebrating as Shanaroisingee Numit by the state government in remembrance of the day Manipur won the coveted Raja Bhalendra Singh Trophy after emerging as overall team champion in the 5th National Games hosted by the state in 1999 .
Addressing the function organized as part of the celebration, the chief minister reminded that the day on which Manipur won the Raja Bhalendra Singh Trophy and said that the day will be written in golden ink in the sport history of Manipur.
He reiterated that Manipur is a powerhouse of India in the field of sports while maintaining that youths of the state have their love of games and sports which was inherent from their forefathers throughout the generations.
Talented sportspersons of the state has made Manipur known to the world, he said, adding that the State was happy with the laurels and achievements that were brought by the sportspersons.
Asserting that various schemes were being taken up by his government for the promotion of sports in the state, the chief minister encouragement the sportspersons by saying that government will continue to extend financial assistances and other facilities to the sportspersons who secured medals at the national and international levels.
The celebration was attended by Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Public Health and Engineering minister Irengbam Hemochandra Singh who is also the president of Manipur Olympic Association and State Parliamentary Secretary of Youth Affairs and Sports M Prithiviraj Singh among others.
