In a significant development, the largest Centrally aided scheme, National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) has been launched finally today along with an orientation training programme at Ukhrul Town Hall here.
The hundred days job guaranteed scheme for the unskilled labour under the NREGS Act which was launched by the Government of India in September 2005 happens to be the biggest ever scheme for the rural areas of the country wherein every household will have the privilege of earning a 100 days wages in a year.
The scheme launched by Deputy Commissioner, Pankaj Kumar Pal turns out to be the first of its kind in Ukhrul district ever since the NREGS Act was passed by the Indian Parliament three years back.
Speaking on the occasion, the Outer Member of Parliament (MP) Charenamei and the three Ukhrul district MLAs, Wungnaoshang Keishing, Phungyar A/C, Dr Khashim Ruivah, Chingai A/C and Danny Shaiza, Ukhrul A/C univocally quoted that the NREGS brings one of the most significant schemes and considered it as the "Project of Unity".
The MP and MLAs further appealed the district level officers and village headmen to be sincere in implementing the project meant for poor targeted unskilled labours.
The DC Ukhrul in his speech briefly highlighted the guidelines of the scheme.
According to which he said, the work should be undertaken with prior objective to alleviate poverty through the respective village authorities and concerned block development officers by issuing verified jobcards to the deserving beneficiaries.
The new project comes in place of the SGRY and is designed to provide 100 days wages to every house hold member in a year, he added.
The muchawaited launching ceremony was successfully marked by the presence of a huge crowd that have gathered from across the district.
