Following an assurance by the Union Labour and Employment Minister Oscar Fernandes, the Joint Action Committee Against Eviction of Lei-Ingkhol has called off its protracted agitation.
The JAC has been agitating against the move of the Government to evict inhabitants of Lei-Ingkhol area to pave the way for construction of the proposed Capitol project at Chingmeirong.
Announcing the decision of calling off the agitation in a press conference at Lei-Ingkhol today, joint secretary of the JAC S Nillachandra said Union Minister of Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes has given the assurance that Lei-Ingkhol would not be affected by the proposed Capital project.
The assurance was given to the representatives of JAC during a joint meeting with the Union Minister at New Delhi on November 4, Nillachandra disclosed, adding that Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh was also present during the said meeting.
The JAC has also received a letter from the Union Minister in this regard on November 7, he said.
As part of its agitation being launched since April 20, 2005, the JAC had staged Wakat Meephams along the National Highway 39 as well as carried out hunger relay strike with 10 residents taking part in each phase.
