The Manipur Hill Journalists' Union (MHJU), in its emergency meeting convened today, strongly condemned the assault on a newspaper distributor by bandh suppor ters at New Lamka today morning.
On account of the assault at around 10 am today despite exemption of media persons from the purview of the bandh called by the Khuga Multi-Purpose Project Local Contractors' Association, Kapliansang, distributor of a vernacular daily had to be hospitalised and undergo a couple of stitches.
Decrying such attack on media persons, the MHJU has issued a show cause notice to the local contractors demanding clarifica tion by 3 pm tomorrow.
Because of the bandh called by the local contractors demanding their pending bills, normal life in the CCpur district was disrupted.
Burning tyres and road barricades could be observed at several roads and lanes of the town.
Suspected bandh supporters also burnt a vehicle (Jeep) at New Lamka area.
Meanwhile, the State Govt has constituted a 3-member Committee of Officers for verification of genuineness of claims for the works taken up as per approved work programme and action plan in respect of Khuga Multi-Purpose Project.
Issuance of cheques have also been put on hold for the time being with the condition that issue of cheques would require certification/approval from the said Committee.
Moirang firing (Imphal): Unidentified gunmen targeted the Moirang Kumam Leikai private residence of former MLA Salam Gopal at around 7.30 pm today.
There is no report of injury caused to anybody in the firing, said source.
