Imphal, January 19, 2011:
Imphal College will organise a five-day workshop on the topic, 'Capacity building of women manager in higher education' from tomorrow.
In a press conference conducted in this regard, Imphal College Principal RC Haomom said that the workshop is being organised with an objective to create equal participation and involvement of women in decision making in the activities related to higher education.
Haomom said that although there is sizable number of women teachers and faculties, women's involvement in the decision making process in higher education is still negligible.
The number of women Principals, Vice-Chancellors, Registrars, Finance Officers and Examination Controllers are very less, said Workshop Coordinator Dr Sinam Binota.
In Manipur, she added, no woman could ever hold the posts of University VC, Registrar Finance Officer, regular Principals in Government colleges.
Dr Binota added that there is need to aspire for holding the administrative posts by the women who are associating with higher education.
Giving an overall figure of India, she said that only seven VCs are women out of 63 total VCs of different Universities.
Dr Binota informed that there are 116 Registrars in the country out of which only 11 are women.
The women faculties possess the required talent to become VCs and Registrars but they seldom plunge into the competitions of holding such higher posts.
University Grants Commission (UGC) has been organising such seminars since 2002-2003 in different regions, Principal PC Haomom said.
Various resource persons would delve into the topics like, 'women's studies perspective', 'women and academic leadership', 'personal and professional roles' and 'women and research' during the five-day workshop.
35 delegates representing Manipur University, RIMS, JNIMS, IIT and different colleges would take part in the workshop.
The workshop will open at the multipurpose hall of the college and continue at the conference hall of the Anthropology Department of Manipur University.
