Imphal, August 04 2011:
Blood is not like Apple or Grapes that are sold in the market nor it is vegetable that is grown in the garden.
So, we need to donate blood and fill the blood banks to save precious human lives, Deputy Director of Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MACS) Dr LR Kom has observed.
Dr Kom was speaking as chief guest at the occasion of a one-day blood donation awareness campaign held at Modern College, Porompat today.
The campaign was organised by Friendship and Development Organisation, Imphal East.
Dr Kom further said that just like giving a gift to others by force is not acceptable, no one should be forced to donate blood.
We should donate blood willingly and voluntarily.
MO in-charge of Blood Bank, JNIMS, Porompat Dr S Ingocha Singh, who attended the campaign as guest of honour, explained that blood taken from anywhere cannot be used for transfusion.
It has to be taken from a licensed blood bank.
But today, the blood banks in Manipur are facing shortage of blood.
Around 27,000 litres of blood are needed in Manipur but only around 21,000 to 22,000 litres are available.
As compared to other States, voluntary blood donation is Manipur is also very low, below 30 percent.
Concluding his speech, Dr Ingocha appealed to the people to come forward and donate their blood voluntarily since the problem of shortage of blood in Manipur cannot be overcome without voluntary blood donors.
In his presidential address, president of Friendship & Development Organisation Yumnam Gojendra Singh observed that all should think and keep the concept in mind that donating blood is everyone's duty.
He also appealed to all to come and join in the blood donation camp which is going to be held in the Blood Bank of JNIMS on August 7.Joint secretary of Association of Manipur Voluntary Blood Donors (AMVBD) K Padmakuni Sharma, who himself has donated blood 12 times and for which he was honoured on the occasion of World blood Donation Day, was also present at the occasion as one of the special invitees.
He pointed out that there would be no question of shortage of blood in Manipur, if people were encouraged to donate blood.
