Imphal, May 24:
Peace and normalcy has finally prevailed at Satu Khoiroi village which had become a ghost town in the wake of the Naga-Kuki clash in 1993 and Zomi-Kuki clash in 1997.The village situated within Hanglep Assembly Constituency in Chura-chandpur district had been completely devastated in the two ethnic clashes of the worst kind forcing the villagers to flee and take shelter elsewhere, but today they have started returning to their homesteads and picking up the thread of life that had been snapped in the fury of communal hatred.
A ceremonial function to mark the re-establishment of the village was held today with the unveiling of a memorial stone.
Works Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei and Science & Technology Minister and Transport Minister T Manga Vaiphei graced the function as chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking at the function, kicked off with colorful cultural dances performed by village young boys and girls, Gaikhangam called upon the people to maintain peace and harmony.
The occasion should not be viewed as just a re-establishment of a village, but a triumph over divisive forces and communal hatred.
It has amply shown that from violence, nothing but devastation can result, he said, adding that the new found wisdom should be the guiding spirit towards taking up works for re-establishment of the village.
He also iterated that joint efforts of all the people is required for development of both the hill and the valley districts of the State.
Science and Technology Minister Manga Vaiphei who is also the local MLA while speaking at the function appealed to the people to leave behind the horrid experiences of the past and move ahead towards development.
Stating that the development works in the State have been affected due to poor financial condition, Manga Vaiphei hoped that the change of leadership and formation of a new Congress-led Government at the Centre would help in overcoming the present difficulties.
Taking the opportunity for highlighting the problems being faced by the village, Chairman of Satu Khoiroi Village Authority submitted a copy of a memorandum each to both the visiting Ministers and they in turn gave their assurances to look into the matter.
