Imphal, March 28:
With the stated objective of saving the indigenous people of Manipur and their cultural identity from becoming extinct as well as from being dominated by migrant population, United Women's Front (UWF), Manipur is all set to launch a mass campaign against the implementation of family planning programme in the State.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at Manipur Press Club here this afternoon, general secretary of the Front Ph Indira said the step has been taken up in view of the possible of obliteration of the cultural identity of the indigenous people of Manipur from the face of the globe as in case of many erstwhile independent kingdoms of South-East Asia.
We have heard the stories of how the cultural identity, tradition, language, script, etc of many small ethnic group of people have become extinct and it is fear that the same fate night befall Manipur.
So the step to prevent implementation of the family planning programme has been mooted, she explained.
He further said it might be reasonable to plan family by people living in other parts of the world, but in Manipur where the population has been decreasing day by day with instances of killing almost on daily basis, adopting such measures is not advisable.
So all the people in Manipur should be cautious and aware of the possible fallouts of adopting family planning policy being pursued by the Central and the State Government, she said.
Detailing on the activities to be taken up by the Front during its campaign, Indira mentioned putting ban on selling of contraceptives and spreading awareness among the people.
While seeking the support of the Government employees as well as other social organisations in the campaign, Indira disclosed that a memorandum would also be submitted to the Government in this connection.
In case of opposition to the campaign, the Front would launch various intense agitations with the support of people, she added.
