Imphal, December 23 2009:
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has stated that though securing votes less than expected was sad, the defeat of the Opposition parties which supported the Independent candidate at the hands of Congress candidate in the just concluded by-election to Yaiskul Assembly Constituency was fulfilling beyond comparison.
Speaking at a reception function hosted by MPCC in honour of newly elected Congress MLA Elangbam Suraj at Congress Bhavan here today, the Chief Minister observed that the result of the by-election was a clear indication that public do not have faith on the Opposition parties at all.
So, the Congress party and the Congress led SPF Government should keep this in mind and work towards fulfilling the promises made in the election manifesto as well as during public meetings, the Chief Minister exhorted the gathering.
MPCC president Gaikhangam expressed happiness over the success of Congress candidate Elangbam Suraj and maintained that the success of the Congress party in the by-election has shown that the people still have strong faith in the Congress party and the SPF Government.
Observing that the just concluded by-election was quite different from any other elections held in the past, Gaikhangam noted that the absence of any able candidate or the failure of the Opposition parties to contest in the election was to the advantage of the Congress party.
Success of the Congress candidate Elangbam Suraj in the by-election has boosted the party all the more, Gaikhangam said, adding that message of the success has been already forwarded to AICC and the Central leaders of the party must be elated.
MPCC president further observed that the success of the Congress party in the by-election was due to the joint efforts made by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Ministers, MLAs and other office bearers of the party.
While considering the result of the by-election as a pointer to the fact that the public and the Congress party cannot be separated, securing less number of votes than expected should be taken as warning of the public.
So efforts should be made from no onward for the next general election, Gaikhangam said.
Newly elected MLA Elangbam Suraj showed his gratitude to the Congress party for fielding him as the party candidate and promised to work in the true spirit of a Congress worker.
He also pledged to fulfil the developmental works left unfinished by his late father for the welfare of Yaiskul Assembly Constituency.
