Imphal, March 10, 2010:
Students of Manipur University have demanded reinstatement of student unions in the university by amending the existing ordinance in line with the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
Various student bodies including the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) were disbanded following the murder of MU Proctor Prof Islamuddin.
Absence of a common body has been causing various inconveniences to the students of MU.
Speaking to media persons within the university campus this afternoon, convenor of MUSU Demand Committee K Sushilkumar recalled all students bodies including MUSU were disbanded by MU authority in the aftermath of the killing of Prof Islamuddin on May 25, 2009. Absence of a common students' body would produce adverse affects on the academic atmosphere of the university.
Since the student bodies were disbanded, a bi-annual research journal could not be published anymore.
Moreover, fellowship entitled to PhD students and the UGC funded Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship have not been paid since last year, Sushilkumar said.
He further alleged that security personnel stationed in the university have been causing much inconveniences to the students including hostellers, teachers and parents alike.
He asserted that the construction works being executed within MU campus are done without maintaining due quality.
All these irregularities and inconveniences could not be addressed as there is no common body for the university students, he said.
Manipur University students have already submi- tted a memorandum explaining the situation arising from the absence of a students' union to the Chancellor PN Srivastava on February 10 last.
Copies of the same memorandum have been submitted to subordinate officials too.
As no response is forthcoming till, a reminder has been dispatched.
In case no positive response is received even after the reminder, Manipur University students would gear up to launch various forms of agitation, Sushilkumar added.
