A mob today torched a brick field at Pourabi in Imphal east district following murdered of the chawkidar of the field reportedly by piercing with a heavy iron tool.
Residents of Lamlai area also blocked the Imphal-Ukhrul section of the NH-150 for a brief period of time today affecting to the normal passage of vehicles.
Police has also arrested two persons including the proprietor of the brick field, Thokchom Jotin and his brother Th Rishi in connection with the murdered of the chawkidar, official reports said.
Forty-six year old Elangbam Borjao, a resident of Lamlai Mayai Leikai in Imphal east district and working as chawkidar at RNK Brick Field, Pourabi village under Lamlai police station succumbed to his injury on the way to a hospital in Imphal late last night.
Doctors at JN Hospital, Imphal declared him brought dead.
The chawkidar sustained severe injury at the abdomen apparently pierced by something heavy iron tool.
Local source said that yesterday night, there was a party attended by the proprietor of the brick field, driver of a truck and driver of the proprietor after works of the day.
The chawkidar was suspected injured in the quarrel.
Family as well as locals of the victim suspected the proprietor of the brick field, Jotin of Khurai Kongpal, his driver, Sakti and a truck driver name M Sanajaoba who went missing after they evacuated the chawkidar behind the murder after they reportedly evacuated the injured chawkidar at the hospital last night.
Irate locals who came on around 10 small four-wheeler vehicles torched all belongings and properties of the brick field early morning before the police arrived.
Properties worth several lakhs of rupees razed to ground before police could control the mob.
The locals continued to protest the incident by blocking the NH-150 at Lamlai area disturbing normal passage of vehicles from around 11 am till noon.
The blocking of the road suspended at about noon when there brought about an understanding with the police when police informed that a case has been registered and investigation has already initiated to book the culprits behind the murder incident but locals continued protesting the murder incident with a sit-in protest cum public meeting at a local ground.
After the meeting, they submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through state health and family welfare minister Ph Parijat, also circle MLA, visiting the spots to take stoke of the situation.
Locals set deadline to book the culprits within the next two day and punish as per law of the land and compensation amount of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the victim.
