Imphal, March 10, 2010:
Enraged over the killing of a brick-field Mohori, local people of Lamlai blocked Imphal-Ukhrul road besides vandalising machinery of the brick field today.
In another unrelated incident, one more individual was found dead near Sora in Thoubal district.
Ilam Borajao who worked as a Mohori in Ram Krishna Brick Field located at Pourabi Awang Leikai under Lamlai police station in Imphal East district was assaulted by some unidentified persons near the gate of the brick field at about 7.30 last night.
He was speared by a pointed iron rod on the right thigh.
But when Borajao was brought to JN Hospital at about 9.18 pm, he was declared brought dead.
It is being speculated that excessive bleeding might have caused the death, said a police source.
Borajao (44) of Lamlai Mayai Leikai is survived by his wife, six daughters and a son.
Suspecting involvement of some workers/staff of the brick field in the killing, a large crowd of people belonging to Lamlai stormed the brick field.
They vandalised and set afire machines installed in the brick field at about 8.30 am today.
Last night, Borajao was together with truck driver Moirangthem Sanajaoba of Pourabi and Thokchom Rashi of Kongpal Kongkham Leikai who happens to be a distant relative and private driver of Thokchom Jotin (41), co-owner of the brick field.
In the meantime, local people of Lamlai blocked Imphal-Ukhrul.
However, the blockade was relaxed in view of the HSLC and Higher Secondary examinations.
Later, a public meeting was held where a joint action committee was also constituted.
The JAC has already drafted a memorandum for submission to Chief Minister Okram Ibobi through local MLA and Health Minister Ph Parijat.
The memorandum demands arrest and punishment of the individuals involved in the killing of Borajao within two days, in addition to extension of ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakhs to the bereaved family and also a suitable Government job to the next of kin of the deceased.
After registering a case, Lamlai police have started investigation into the killing.
Meanwhile, the Pourabi Lainingthou Puthiba Thousil Kanglup Development Committee and the Pourabi Yaipha Naharol Kanglup have decried the acts of vandalism and arson committed in the brick field.
On the other hand, another man was found dead near Sora under Kakching police station in Thoubal district.
The man was found dead inside a culvert built across a canal known as Loushi Khongjao, on the eastern side of Imphal-Moreh road, said a police source.
The deceased appears to be Muslim.
It is suspected that the corpse was dumped there after being killed.
Marks of strangulation with something like a rope were observed on the neck of the deceased.
