Imphal, Jun 04:
The unique traditional values and culture of a Nation passed on from generation to generation should be preserved and upheld by each and every citizen of the Nation, said titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba.
Speaking on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Indigenous Arts and Culture Association at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Sanajaoba noted that culture identifies a Nation.
In the face of strong cultural currents belonging to large religious groups and nationalities now sweeping all over the world, smaller peoples like Manipuris should take the collective responsibility to preserve their own culture, he said.
The titular king also lamented that the youths have become more accustomed to western culture alien to indigenous culture rather than keeping them up.
He cautioned that a very bleak future awaits the whole Manipuri nation if such trend continues unchecked.
While acknowledging the fact that changes in every sphere following the strong current of globalisation is unavoidable, he maintained that such changes should be based on our own traditional culture and customs rather than over hauling the whole indigenous system.
It should rather be modifications to suit the modern compulsions, he added.
During the function, which was also attended by Director of Archives K Sushila and Chief Medical Officer of Thoubal Dr Manglem as presidium members, a book titled Naitom Shatpi was also released.
