Imphal, April 18:
Setting April 20 as the deadline for unconditional release of the three persons arrested by the State Police Commandos from Cheiraoching in the evening of April 13, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur has warned of launching various intense agitations in association with other civil organisations in case the demand is not met.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at the office of the Poirei Ita Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, president of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur Memchoubi said that the three persons namely Paonam Debananda (50) of Keishampat Leimajam Leikai, Yumnam Brojen (50) of Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai and Asem Sachi of Singjamei Chingamathak Nameirakpam Leikai whom the police commandos have arrested from Cheiraoching are innocent civilians.
They have gone to Cheiraoching to collect the belongings left behind by womenfolk who have made offering and lit candles at the memorial stone.
None of them have any connection with any underground organisations.
They are family men leading simple life.
While pointing that the UG group concerned have already refuted the police claim that the three arrested persons are overground members of the group, Memchoubi noted that detention of innocent persons in police custody is in violation of the law.
Arresting them simply because they were present at Cheiraoching at that relevant time, shows the misconduct and excesses of the State police commandos, she contended.
So, in case, all three of them are not released without any condition within the set deadline of April 20, the Meira Paibi body would join hand with other civil organisations in launching various intense agitation, she announced, adding categorically that the Government should be held responsible for any untoward incident that may occur during the course of the agitations to be launched.
It may be mentioned here that various social organisations have been organising and staging Wakat Meephams at various places over the same demand of release the three arrested persons unconditionally.
