Lamka, January 27:
Life in the interior part of this district still lingers on with the deadly threats of mines, planted allegedly by underground cadres and worsened by the forceful use of innocent villagers to clear them by the military.
On January 24 at around 8 am army personnel entered Thenjol village under Thanlon sub-division and allegedly took two youths to a mine site, where the villagers dare not venture after they were alerted by militants.
Lhunthang (25) S/o Hauhsat of Thenjol, Thanlon Sub-Division was forced to walk at the site against his will and worse when he contested against walking any further, he was told to hit his path with a stick which triggered a mine, critically injuring his foot and left palm besides his thigh, arm, chest, throat and face.
The blast also reportedly wounded a soldier and he was airlifted from the spot, while Lhunthang was denied the same privilege.
Two days after the incident doctors here amputated his right leg and were still to operate on the shrapnel at his chest.
Minthang s/o Thangsei of Thenjol, the victim's partner who was also part of the 9 villagers accompanying the victim, while talking to The Sangai Express said, it was a nightmarish experience, something he loathes to recall.
