Prominent philanthropist and agreeably the oldest known living person in the Manipur hills, Jaosangpou Phaomei passed away on May 24 at the age of 115 or so.
Mr Jaosangpao Phaomei who was born in the later half of the 19th Century at Chongphun village in Tamenelong district, was a Communal harmony pioneer arid a staunch campaigner of literacy in the area.
He was responsible for bringing a numbers of school teachers from Imphal to the district with the whole expenditure sponsored by himself saying that education alone could and the only way to change the lifestyle of the hill people.
Late Jaosangpou had also donated whatever property he had including land for the welfare of the people mainly for the settlement of landless people and for the building of schools.
Late Jaosangpou was loved by both meiteis and tribals for his enduring spirit of oneness among the mankind attitude.
He could never tolerate any sort of lie, cheat, or hateful deeds.
