Imphal, December 16:
Even as displaced villagers from the border areas of Manipur adjoining Myanmar have started trooping in at Moreh after having left their homes and hearths following exchange of heavy firing between Indian Army and the underground organisations during the past few days, the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup has fervently appealed to all the people to extend every possible assistance to the displaced villagers.
After flushing out the militants, Army's bunker comes up at Khengjoi range and displaced villagers taking shelter at Moreh
Talking to the media, chief of Khengjoi village Khonkhuthang Haokip informed that they left their homesteads a week earlier for Molcham following heavy gun-fight between the security forces and underground activists.
From Molcham they decided to come to Moreh.
The Khengjoi chief further disclosed that around 1000 people from seven villages namely Sehlon, Foireng, Chaljang, Vajang, Toitum, Old Samtal and Haifengkot are also taking shelter at Tuireng village.
He also appealed to the authorities of the State Government for taking up necessary measures for restoration of normalcy in their village so that they could celebrate the Christmas festival along with their children peacefully.
In all 413 displaced villagers from the border area arrived at Moreh today.
This include 80 of them from Khengjoi village, 90 from Wailou village, 45 from Moldanom village, 80 from Molkon village, 65 from Songdok village and 73 from Bongjoi village.
It is expected that the number of displaced villagers would risen as they have to come from Myanmar side and might have been stranded on the way due to restriction imposed entry of people on both sides of the border.
Meetei Council, Moreh (MCM) reportedly made necessary arrangements for providing meal to all the displaced villagers even as Hill Tribal Council (HTC), Moreh have arranged for lodging them for the night at Moreh Super Market.
Meanwhile, expressing deep concern for the plights of the displaced villagers from border area, the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup has fervently appealed to all the people to extend every possible help in ameliorating their difficulties.
Condemning bombing and firing in human settlement area thereby leading exodus of people from border areas, the Apunba Lup pointing out displacement of civilians from their homesteads as a result of fighting between combatants is in violation of the provisions of Geneva Convention.
Converting an area inhabited by civilians as a military zone is also in violation of all the democratic norms and rule of law, the Apunba Lup said in a statement signed jointly by its co-ordinators Babloo Laishram, Ph Deben and Langdon.
While drawing the attention of the international communities including organising like International Committee of the Red Cross toward resolving the ongoing conflict along the International border of Myanmar and Manipur, the Apunba Lup further informed that it would set up a Relief Committee to be represented by people of various communities for helping the displaced people.
