Even as the foundation stones for Tipaimukh Dam and Loktak Downstream Project were laid today, the general strike called by the anti dam lobby crippled normal life all over the State with Tamenglong district facing the brunt of the strike.
Suspected anti-dam activists set on fire the office of Horticulture and Soil Conservation office at Tamenglong district today at noon destroying its ceiling and wall.
The roads at Tamenglong wore a deserted look and all educational establishments remained closed for the day.
At Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur and Ukhrul economic activities were affected and inter-district buses suspended service for the day.
At Imphal, all shops and educational establishments remained closed for the day.
Meanwhile the Angikar Bangladesh has drawn up a series of protest against Tipaimukh dam.
On December 17 a protest will be held at 12 pm at Chandpur, the river port town situated at the confluence of Padma, Meghna and Dakatia rivers.
A similar protest will be staged on December 20 at Mymensing town overlooking the Brahmaputra.
