There is great need to treat mentally challenged people with sensitivity and equality said Yumnam Ibechaobi, secretary All Manipur Mentally Handicapped Welfare Organisation at an awareness function held today at Heikham Kala Memorial Community Hall, Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai.
Under the sponsorship of Social Upliftment Network, Nupi Yakairol Thangmeiband organized the awareness programme entitled 'community interaction programme with mentally challenged and differently able child and persons with autism'.
Guest of honour Yumnam Ibechaobi further said that it is important that handicapped pre natal women should receive special care.
Persons who are mentally challenged have as much right as the rest.
So it is necessary to be aware about their special needs through such awareness programmes.
She also highlighted the achievements of the All Manipur Mentally Handicapped Welfare Organisation at Mongsangei which have been successfully delivering services through the mentally challenged persons' centre.
Through consultations, we should take up whatever steps be needed for the welfare of the mentally challenged, she added.
Chief guest of the function MPCC secretray Jotin Waikhom also emphasized on the need for taking up various measures for the mentally challenged persons.
Ngangom Chaoba, retired additional director Health Services Manipur and social worker K Laxman were the guests of honour.
Gifts were distributed to mentally challenged children as part of the function.
