Imphal, January 15:
Two personnel of 32 Assam Rifles were killed in an ambush by suspected UG cadres at a place 40 km North of Tengnoupal police station under Chandel district yesterday evening at around 6:30 pm.
Police sources confirmed the incident but reported that details of the ambush are not available as yet.
However according to information received by the press the slain jawans have been identified as Subedar Anantmani and Lance Naik Sukhdev.
The ambush took place when the AR personnel were returning to their camp after an operation.
When The Sangai Express contacted the PRO of Assam Rifles, he confirmed the death of the two jawans and added that the incident took place last night when the security personnel had gone atop a hillock.
The militants, probably PLA cadres, who were holed up in the area opened fire and then escaped, said the PRO and added that one of their cadres was also injured in the gun fight.
It is learnt that the injured cadre later succumbed to his injuries this morning, said the PRO further.
Search operations is still on but till the time of filing this report there is no report of any arrest.
Assam Rifles authority has reported the matter to Singjamei police today.
Moreh protest AR excesses, rally on Jan 20 : Taking strong exception against the recent spurt of killing innocents by Assam Rifles personnel at Moreh, detention and torture as well as the recent incident in which the AR authority declined to admit that it had arrested one youth, a number of different organisations are set to stage a protest rally at Moreh on January 20.The decision to stage the rally was taken during a meeting attended by HRA, MAFYF, AMSU, Chandel Dist Committee, Minority Women Development Association, MCM, Kha-Nongpok Apunba Nupi Lup and Nupi Khunai Chaokhat Lamjing Lup.
Youth picked up by AR, released later : A youth was picked up by 24 AR yesterday at around 11 pm from near Moreh Gate no 2 amidst vehement opposition by Meira Paibis and numerous blank firing by AR personnel.
The youth picked up by AR is identified as Yendre-nbam Moovi (14) of Moreh ward no IV.
As the news of his arrest spread, the local Meira Paibis tried to stop the AR men following which the security men opened several rounds of blank fire near Tamil Sangam ground.
Later at around 11.50 am following a telephonic conversation between OC of Moreh PS and AR authority, Moovi was handed over to the Meira Paibis.
