The 24-hour long State wide general strike called jointly by various organisations with effect from 6 pm yesterday to protest the killing of M Indrasen for ransom by the proscribed outfit PULF concluded peacefully today.
The general strike crippled normal life and business transaction in the State with all the main markets and shops remaining closed in the capital city and inter-district buses staying off the road.
Some smaller vehicles were, though seen on the road.
Security personnel were also posted at various sensitive areas to avoid any untoward incident during the general strike.
The strike was complete along the Mayai Lambi route with suspected strike supporters inflating tyres and pelting stones at vehicles plying in defiance of the strike.
The glasses of over 50 to 70 vehicles were reportedly damaged as a result.
At many places of Samurou area, a large number of local people came out to enforce the bandh by blocking the road with timber and burning old tyres in the middle of the road.
Placards and festoons with slogans denouncing PULF were also seen being put up at many spots in Samurou.
On account of the general strike, the roads and market places wore deserted look in Thoubal and Bishnupur district as well.
Shops and other business establishment also downed their shutters and there was no vehicular traffic on the road.
