Imphal, June 29 2009:
The ransacking of a house located in Nagaram in Imphal East district recently has been linked to the severe assault of one SP Worlingla (28) nearly a month back in Kasom Khullen.
Speaking to newspersons at New Checkon today Jajo Robertson, chairman of Kasom Khullen Sub Division Development Association, alleged that on May 28 evening Worlingla was found severely thrashed and the victim herself named one Shimreiso as the attacker.
Worlingla reportedly revealed the identity of the assailant on June 25 at JN Hospital where she is recovering.
The secretary also insisted that for the last many weeks people of Kasom Khullen had been expecting Government forces to pull up the culprit/s and punish them, and June 28 as the deadline for appropriate action.
He further conceded that Kasom Khullen people were unaware of the district police having pulled up Shimreiso and younger brother of the accused person named Chance on June 24 after which both have been remanded to police custody till July 1 .
Calling upon the State authorities to ensure that justice is delivered and the guilty ones punished under law, Jajo Robertson voiced strong resentment that rather than perpetrators of the criminal act facing the penalty the police have been singling out certain individuals on the charge of involvement in the ransacking of the Nagaram house which belongs to the father of the arrested brothers.
Another of the Association's functionary SP Mayonmi cautioned that in case there is any arrest related to the Nagaram incident the consequences would be even more drastic.
It is informed that SW Chance s/o Abraham of Tushar village in Ukhrul district married SP Worlingla of Kasom Khullen in 2000 with the couple's first girl child delivered at the husband's place.
After some years, the marital bliss was short-lived as Chance allegedly had intimacy with another woman and started frequent quarrel and torturing Worlingla ultimately forcing her to return to her parental home where she delivered another girl child.
Regarding the assault case, it is contended that on May 28 Worlingla's brother in-law (Shimreiso) showed up at Kasom Khullen in connection with his timber trade and asked Worlingla to return back to her husband.
As the mobile phone signal was found to be weak at Worlingla's place both moved out to locate a suitable place only for the family members to realise at late evening that the woman was missing.
Subsequent searches launched by the villagers discovered a badly wounded Worlingla in unconscious state a few distance away from her home and was immediately rushed to JN Hospital.
Joining the media briefing chairman of Tangkhul Naga Aze Long J Mayarmi reposed faith upon the Government in doing the needful but added that with the victim and the accused both belonging to the same community settling the dispute under customary law needs to be initiated.
However, representative of Kasom Khullen Shinnao Long (women's union) SP Phungramla strongly criticised assault of Worlingla and desired that the attacker be punished under relevant law that upholds dignity of women as well as protects her rights.
