Five people, including four policemen, were killed in an ambush today by ULFA militants in Assam's Dibrugarh district.
According to police, the policemen were returning after escorting officials of the Mukhanglya tea estate who were carrying money to pay the monthly salary of garden employees when the militants triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) under their vehicle at Bhekulajan, about 50 km from here.
The vehicle was ripped apart by the powerful blast.
Two PREPAK men held at Aizawl : In a swift operation at dawn, two suspected militants belonging to the Manipur's People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) were arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel at Chanmari locality here today.
Assam Rifles authorities, who were still tight-lipped about the identities of the arrested militants, said that one of them is suspected to be a 'Sergeant Major' and another is a 'Corporal' in the outfit.
No weapons were recovered from the militants who were occupying a rented house, but a laptop was seized by the arresting officials.
"We are still interrogating them and I hope that we will be able to find out more," a senior Assam Rifles official said.
PREPAK militants had ambushed a police patrol and killed four policemen and two civilians on the Mizoram-Manipur border hamlet of Vaitin in 1999.This was the lone instance of its violent activty in the State.
Rifleman found hung self to death : A Rifleman of 3rd IRB stationed at Pangei was found hung to death from a tree growing near the quarters guard of the battalion at around 9.30 pm yesterday.
The deceased has been identified as Dibonpou Panmei (27) of Muktiyan (Tokpa) village of Churachandpur district.
Though the motive behind the death is not yet established, Heingang Police Station has registered a case in this connection.
The body has also been handed over to the bereaved family members after post-mortem at RIMS morgue today.
One shot : A man was shot at by three unidentified persons today at about 1:15 pm at Sugnu parking, Rengkai Road under Churachandpur police station.
The injured victim is identified Henkhongam alias Ng- angam Haokip (36) s/o late Konkhongam Haokip of New Bijang village.
The victim was hit by ei-ght bullets in several parts of his body.
Even as he was immediately rushed to Chu-rachandpur District Hospi- tal, he was referred to RIMS as his condition worsens.
