State agriculture department today demonstrated use of Pheramom trap to control paddy plans from infection by nungyen under the Farmers' Field School programme in the model seed villages at Andro in Imphal east district, Tentha and Khangabok in Thoubal district.
Farmers Field School is a programme conducted by the experts of the state agriculture department with agricultural scientists of the Central Agriculture University (CAU) Iroishemba.
Under the programme farmers are taught latest technology of scientific ways of cultivation with field demonstration.
In the programme held today, deputy director (soil chemist) Ph Rajendro, deputy director (planning) G Shamu Kabui, professor, Dr Nabanchandra, senior associate professor, Herojit of CAU along with the experts of the department demonstrated the farmers on application of Pheramom traps in the field to control Nungyen.
The team also inspected the paddy fields growing rice under the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) technology along with the farmers of the Andro, Tentha and Khangabok.
The Andro Model Seed Village covers 50 hectares of field, Tentha Model Seed Village covers 10 hectare while that of Khangabok covers 35 hectares of field.
Experts recommended the farmers to take special care at the fruit bearing stage of the paddy plants while demonstrating on how to control insects and pest in their fields.
Ph Rajendro speaking to the farmers asked to prepare for rabi crops informing that agriculture department is ready to supply seeds of rabi crops like pea, mustard etc.
The deputy director (soil chemist), further said this year rabi campaign will be conducted with giving emphasis to double cropping scheme, a new scheme for the farmer framed by the department.
Agriculture department is targeting to grow pulse (pea specially) 22,250 hectares of land and another 20,750 hectares by mustard this year.
Out of this total area 10,000 hectares will be covered by the double cropping scheme while the area to be cover by the same scheme is 15 hectares, he added.
