The 61st Loumeegi Numit (Farmers' Day) was observed under the aegis of Manipur Loumee Marup at Rupmahal Theatre here today.
Social worker Ningthoujam Binoy and president of Manipur Loumee Marup L Kunja attended the inaugural function as chief guest and president respectively.
Social worker L Tiken, founder of Manipur Loumee Marup L Yaima, social worker M Samu, social worker N Nripen, social worker S Bihari, founder of Manipur Loumee Marup M Gulamjat, CPI (M) secretary Sarat Salam and secretary of Manipur Loumee Marup Th Nilakamal were also present at the occasion as guest of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Ningthoujam Binoy observed that development of the farmers is not possible without ther support and co-operation of the people.
Unfortunately, now-a-days the farmers are not the owners of the land being till by them.
Sarat Salam noted that sufficiency in food production is essential for making democracy more meaningful.
For the 25 lakhs people in the State, the total quality of food required in a year is around 25 lakh matric tonne.
But the State has been able to produced only 4 lakh matric tonne.
Inspite of that the Government has been trying to take over the cultivation land in the name of developmental works, he lamented.
The congregation also paid floral tributes to the photograph of Jananeta Hijam Irabot at the occasion.
