State fishery department is targeting to produce 20.200 metric tons of fish during the current year, said fishery secretary, RK Sukumar who estimated the annual requirement of fish product of the state at around 25.32 metric tons.
Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of the One-day Training Programme on rearing of Pengba held at Imphal West fisheries office at Lamphel, the officer said that the state needs 25.32 metric tons of fish in a year calculating the consumption of 11 kg of fisher per head per year.
The training programme was organised under the aegis of the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Research and state Fisheries Department.
Sukumar further observed that Pengba, the state fish was on the verge of extinction when experts in construction of Ethai Dam failed to study the impact to be given to this rare variety of indigenous fish.
Not only the Pengba but also many other variety of fish had vanished or on the verge of extinction as they had not consider the inhabitant of the indigenous fishes.
He also talked elaborately on the effort of the mass scale production of Pengba taken up by his department.
