Imphal, July 27 2010:
Insisting that justice be delivered in the controversial death of Ningombam ningol Sarangthem ongbi Renubala and her daughter Alva, the JAC constituted in connection with the issue has decided to launch various modes of agitation.
Noting that eight young women have either been killed or reported to have committed suicide in Thoubal district this year, the JAC general secretary Nirmala said these are only the recorded cases.
There might many other similar unreported cases.
However, no one has been punished according to law in connection with these killings/deaths till date.
Such abject failure of the Government to bring justice in all these cases has agonised the womenfolk of Thoubal district.
Maintaining that the reported suicide of Renubala and Alva by consuming poison was highly suspicious, Nirmala said that memoranda have been submitted to the Chief Minister and the Thoubal DC to establish the facts and circumstances of the death.
In case the Chief Minister and local MLA fails to pay special attention to the issue and establish the facts at the earliest, womenfolk of Thoubal district would launch different modes of agitation including suicide in front of the Chief Minister's official residence, Nirmala said.
The reported deaths of eight young women by committing suicide and the one hacked to death by her own husband in Thoubal district this year have testified that the rate of domestic violence against women is highest in Thoubal district.
All these cases of domestic violence which compelled women to commit suicide coupled with clear cases of killing have terrified womenfolk of the district.
Nirmala asserted that it would go a long way in deterring similar crimes against women in future if the Government can establish the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Renubala and Alva.
The contention and call of some Salungpham people, that Renubala's husband Bishorjit and mother-in-law who are currently in police custody are innocent and they should be released, was surprising and unwarranted.
Post mortem reports of the mother-daughter duo have not been received till date.
At the moment, it would be pre-mature to declare Bishorjit and his mother innocent.
