A village chief who had been abducted by miscreants on ransom on July 22 last was found killed and abandoned at a place near the Pasong village under Litan police station of Ukhrul district yesterday even as family paid Rs 30,000 .
The dead body of Khamlen Haokip (45) son of late Jamkholun, chief of the Chingphu village of Saikhul, Senapati was found lying at the place yesterday morning at about 9.30 am.
Family source said that he was abducted by five miscreants on the night of July July 22 last in connection with ransom demand from their house.
After taken into captivity, miscreants had demanded Rs one lakh for securing him save release.
The family has provided Rs 30,000 immediately when they come to abduct him.
But despite the payment of the money, they forcibly took away him.
On the next day of the abduction, miscreants contacted the family and informed to come with the money and meet them at Lamphel Super Market with an assurance to release him safely.
Her wife went to meet the abductors as per their information at Lamphel Super market without the money as the family could not afford the money.
Three men who were there, however left with angry as she came without money.
They also took away Rs 100 from the wife of the village chief before leaving the place.
After then, family could not get contact with the abductors as the mobile they had contacted earlier has been kept switch off.
Then, the family lodged a complaint with the Saikhul police station regarding the abduction of the chief.
But, the dead body was found yesterday at Pasong village.
The dead body was brought by the Assam Rifles at their home.
Post mortem to the dead body was performed today at RIMS morgue and taken back by the family for last rites.
However, sources said that there was a quarrel between the chief and some NREGS card holders sometime back and over the chiefmanship.
His dead may have related with one of the matters, the source said.
