Chief minister of Manipur, O Ibobi has expressed regret that the session for medical courses at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), located at Porompat in Imphal East district, could not be started this year due to the incomplete infrastructural requirements for the medical institute.
"Many times, I think of resigning", confessed the Chief Minister in a rare moment of vulnerability, while expressing his disappointment to the staff of JNIMS at not being able to start the session of the medical institute this year.
The Chief Minister asked the staff of JNIMS and Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital not to be disappointed at not being able to start the session for the medical course this year and consoled them by saying that the state of Tripura got the green signal from the Medical Council of India (MCI) to start the session after the fourth attempt and Sikkim got it after the second attempt.
He said that the state government is giving priority to the completion of the infrastructure of the JNIMS and informed the gathering that another Rs 50 crore has been sanctioned under the Prime Minister's special package for the year 2009-2010 for the completion of works related to the medical institute.
The first session of the medical institution can be started by next year as the infrastructure building will be completed within 4/5 months, and 50-100 students can be accommodated in the first session, the chief minister added.
One of the doctors of JNIMS said that the government should pay more attention to the performance of the hospital, completion of the infrastructure of the institute and appointment of the faculty of the institute, as these are the things that the MCI look at during their visit to monitor the progress of the works related to the medical institute.
