Troops of the 26 Assam Rifles gunned down two suspected activists of the Kangleipak Communist Party (MC) in what PIB (Defence Wing) claimed were multiple ambushes laid by the troops last night at New Bongjang village under Sapermaina police station of Senapati district bordering Imphal west district.
One AK-56 rifle with 120 rounds loaded in three magazines, a lethode gun with 11 shells and one .32 pistol with a magazine containing one live round were recovered from the spot in the follow up search operations in the aftermath of the shoot out.
A statement of the PRO, PIB (Defence Wing) Imphal today said that, the underground activists were killed in multiple ambushes laid by troops of Red Shield Division last night.
Around 7.15 pm, suspected movements were noticed in the thick undergrowth by the troops.
The individuals challenged reacted by opening indiscriminate fire on the troops.
The ensuing gun fight lasted for about 20 minutes, the statement added.
The two dead bodies of the suspected undergrounds were handed over to the Sapermaina police station today with the recovered items today.
The bodies were transferred to the RIMS morgue, Imphal for official identification.
Locals sources said that, no sooner had the troops arrived, they could hear and see gun shots and bright flares in the sky.
Villagers nearby the clash site said that the encounter lasted for about 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, in continued bomb attacks at the houses of government officials and individuals in Manipur relating to extortion demands by UGs, a hand grenade was lobbed at the house of a retired government officer last night, police said.
The hand grenade hurled by militants exploded at the courtyard of the residence of Soibam Anandi Devi of Liwa Lambi Chanam Pukhri Mapal Ningthoujam Leikai under Singjamei police station last night at about 9.20 pm.
She was an accountant in the Manipur Treasury Department and had recently retired on superannuation.
There were no injuries and the police have registered a case.
