Imphal, February 04 2010:
Taking strong exception to the failure of the Zeliangrong Interim Body (ZIB) to finalise nomenclature of the Zeliangrong apex body, to hold elections for functionaries of the apex body and zonal bodies and the inability to amend constitution of the apex body, the All Zeliangrong Students' Union (AZSU) has demanded dissolution of the ZIB.
A press release by the AZSU said that it's time that the ZIB members graciously resign and let a new committee/body be set up in its place who enjoys confidence and trust of the Zeliangrong general public.
So long as the ZIB continue to retain office the desire of the Zeliangrong people to have a strong and unified apex body would remain impeded.
As a corollary of the ZIB's inept handling of the crisis and utter failure to finalise the name of the apex body and elect a new executive council for the same within the deadline of January 31, 2010, there was a report in the February 2 issue of this paper that the Zeliangrong Union has revived itself.
Saying that the Zeliangrong Baudi is likely to follow suit, the AZSU remarked that the painstaking efforts of the Zeliangrong public for Zeliangrong unity would be irreparably undone because of the ZIB's failure.
Reacting to the ZIB's claim that drafts of the proposed amendments to the constitution have been already completed, the student body demanded circulation of the draft copies to the public for due comments.
"The AZSU will be constraint to surmise that the ZIB has malafide intention in withholding the draft if it fails to publicly circulate the same for necessary actions", it alleged.
Regarding the ZIB's contention that festivals like Christmas, New Year, Gaan-Ngai and geographical constraints forced them to miss the deadline of January 31, the AZSU asked had the ZIB not thought about all these when it was constituted on October 30 last year.
Although the ZIB claimed that it has been holding consultation meeting with the Zeliangrong public since its inception, no resolutions of such meetings have been made public till date, the AZSU asserted.
Further, the student body urged upon the ZIB members to relinquish their office in the interest of the Zeliangrong people as a whole.
