Manipur State Commission for Women has sought opinion and suggestion from the public in connection with the proposal of starting a new Scheme for providing relief and rehabilitation to women who are victims of rape.
Addressing a press conference in this con nection at the office of the Commission, located within the complex of Imphal West DC office today, chairperson of the Commission, Dr Ch Jamini said that giving compensation to a rape victim is not a fitting solution as there is nothing to measure the extent to which the victim has suffered men tally, physically and socially.
Therefore, the Scheme for Relief and Re habilitation of Victims of Rape has been proposed by the National Commission for Women, since August 2008, with the main objective of providing relief and rehabilita tion to all women who are victims of rape, she said.
Under this scheme, a woman who is a victim of rape would be provided with a relief amount of upto Rs 2 lakhs.
While informing that a seminar of all the Chairpersons of State Commission for Women was organised by the National Com mission for Women at New Delhi on July 25, to discuss the finer points of the scheme, Dr Jamini explained that before implementation of the proposed scheme, the suggestions and opinions of the people on what else should be included in the light of the present conflict situation, drug and HIV issues are essential to make the scheme more meaningful.
The State Commission for Women would forward all these suggestions and opinions of the public to the National Commission for Women.
Member of Manipur State Commission for Women, L Gangte, was also present dur ing the press conference.
The Commission has also urged the pub lic to provide their opinions and suggestions for the proposed scheme.
