Imphal, October 26 2014:
After it was abolished way back in the year 2009, Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) is now going to be revived again as university authority has already started taking up steps to revive the union in tandem with the assurance given by President of India, Pranab Mukherjee during the 18th Convocation of MU on April 29 of the year that the union will be revived from the academic session of 2014-15 .
It is most likely that an election of MUSU would be held before second week of coming November to elect its new office bearers.
To do the needful, Vice-Chancellor of the university has constituted an Election Committee for holding the election according to Article 13 of MUSU constitution.
Sources informed Hueiyen Lanpao that Prof RK Hemakumar, Dean of Students' Welfare, MU has been appointed as the Chairman of the Election Committee and Prof MC Arun, Department of Anthropology; Prof N Promodini, Department of Linguistic; Assistant Prof M Chaurjit, Department of Physical Education & Sports Science and Assistant Prof Thangjamang Lhouvum, Manipur Institute of Management Studies (MIMS) as its Members.
A Grievance Cell has been also formed by the university authority to ensure that the election which is going to be held after a gap of five years is conducted in free and fair manner.
Nevertheless, a meeting of the university was already convened to elect Returning Officer and four Observers of the election of which their names will be announced after issuing a notification shortly, the sources said.
The sources maintained that the election would follow guideline of Lyngdo Committee as done in its last election and that the date of the election would be announced in first week of November.
The last date for making identity cards for bonafide students to be enrolled in the electoral roll of the election is October 31.Given that all necessary arrangement is being made accordingly, it is most likely that the election would be held within second week of November.
It may be recalled here that the MUSU was abolished in 2009 following an incident.
Though the university authority had been asked to form a Students' Council in place of the union in accordance to Manipur University Act 2008, the same has been not formed till yet.
Following the failure of the university authority to form any students' body of the university which has led its students no place for complaining, the Manipur University Students' Union Revival Demand Committee (MUSU-RDC) was formed on May 17, 2013 to demand revival of MUSU at the earliest.
The committee had already submitted memorandum to President of India, Union Human Resource Development Minister and university authority urging to revive the MUSU without any further delay.
In pursuance of its demand, the committee has been launching different forms of agitation.
