Cycle rally calls for saving Nambul River

Creating awareness on the need to maintain the Nambul River which is now almost filled with dirt posing serious health hazard, Innovative Youth Society and Manipur Cycle Club jointly organized a cycle rally under the banner 'Nambul River Revival Tour' along the river road today.
The rally which was flagged off from Keishampat passed through Wahengbam Leikai, Uripok, Naoremthong, Sagolband, Keishamthong and Pishum Leikai before ending at Thong Nambonbi where a public meeting was held.
Addressing the gathering, Athouba, president of Innovative Youth Society asserted that certain steps like prohibiting dumping of waste materials in the river, plantation of tree saplings along the bank of the river, adopting resolutions in connection with preservation of the river etc should be done as prompt measures to save the river.

He urged women folks to take lead role in maintaining cleanliness of the river as their voices cannot go unheard and called upon the people to put in joint efforts to exert pressure on the government to contribute their parts in saving the river.
Contending that the Nambul River has been reduced to a pitiable condition with dirt and waste products which are hazardous to health filling in it, he pointed out that waste materials and contaminated water of the water have affected even the natural habitat of Loktak Lake which is a serious concern.
Dumping of waste materials in the river is continuing unabated.
The wave of the river after reaching Samusang Uku carried away contaminated water accumulated in Lamphelpat area and passed through Naoremthong, Bijoy Govinda Mamang Leikai Maharani Bridge, Wahengbam Leikai, Kakhulong and Keishamthong bringing back all waste materials from the areas it passed through in its cycle, he added.
He said that meetings will be held during the International Chinjak Festival to be organized by Innovative Youth Society from November 16 to discuss measures that can be taken up to save the river.
As part of the rally, public meetings were also held at Naoremthong, Sagolband and Pishum.
