Imphal, November 29 2010:
A 75-year old man was severely wounded when suspected NSCN (IM) cadres beat him mercilessly in an interior area of Sugnu in Thoubal district bordering Chandel district.
Decrying the savagery of the armed cadres, a 12-hour bandh has been called at Sugnu Bazar tomorrow (Tuesday).
The bandh will be effective from 5 am to 5 pm.
Seventy-five year old Nandeibam Mohon of Sugnu Makha Leikai was assaulted by armed NSCN (IM) cadres yesterday morning on his way back from his paddy field.
He was beaten up by the NSCN (IM) cadres who came in a red coloured vehicle (Bolero).
Villagers said the cadres first punched the old man and then kicked him repeatedly even after he had fallen on the ground by the impact of the punches.
After beating up him black and blue, the cadres proceeded towards Chandel side, they added.
A villager who was witness to the assault brought the old man to the Sugnu Community Health Centre.
Police has registered a case with regard to the assault.
Strongly decrying the merciless assault on the old man, villagers have called a dawn to dusk bandh at Sugnu Bazar which would be effective from 5 am to 5 pm.
The decision to call the bandh was taken in a public meeting held today after a sit-in protest was staged at the Bazar.
