Imphal, November 29 2010:
Categorically declaring that MPP would not be fielding its own candidate in the forth-coming by-election to Konthoujam Assembly constituency, MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang has stated that his party would support CPI if the Left party put up its candidate.
The by-election has been necessitated following the demise of then sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Dr Sapam Budhichandra.
Dr Budhichandra won the Konthoujam seat in the last Assembly elections as a Congress candidate.
Speaking to media persons today, Dr Nimaichand informed that the party has decided not to put up its own candidate in the Konthoujam A/C by-election.
However, the party would support CPI candidate in order to defeat the Congress candidate even if the two parties are partners of the SPF coalition.
Nevertheless, the MPP president put up certain conditions if the CPI wants MPP support.
First, CPI should come out of the SPF coalition Government.
In case, no other parties put up their candidates and the by-election turns out to be a straight fight between Congress and CPI, MPP would support the latter without any condition in order to defeat the Congress candidate, Dr Nimaichand said.
Notably, BJP has already proposed to all like-minded parties to field a common candidate instead of fielding its own candidate.
