The second Manipur State Award for Literature 2009 has been conferred on noted author Thangjam Ibopishak.
The award distribution function held at Kangla hall today under the aegis of the Education Department (Schools) was graced by Governor Gurbachan Jagat, Education Minister L Jayantakumar and noted scholar RK Jhaljit as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The literary award instituted by the State Govt since 2008 was conferred on BM Maisnamba for the first time last year for his novel Ningthemnubi.

The second Manipur State Award for Literature was conferred on Thangjam Ibopishak for his poems work Sreemati Tomcha Babu.
Thangjam Ibopishak was born to Th Kanhai and Yambem ningol Tombi of Wangkhei Thangjam Leikai on February 22, 1948.He started writing poetry since the tender age of 13 .
His first poetry work Apaiba Thawai (1969) was published when he was just 21 years old.
Other published works of Thangjam Ibopishak include Shingnaba (coauthored with Yumlembam Ibomcha and Ranjit W), Norok Patal Prithivi, Bhoot Amasung Maikhum, Maya Desh, Meegi Manam, and Sreemati Tomcha Babu.
He was also the editor of the poetry compendium Bharatki Ningtam Matunggi Manipuri Poetry, published by NBT India, New Delhi.
Thanjam Ibopishak has been already honoured with the Manipur State Kala Akademi Award, Jamini Sunder Guha Gold Medal, Jananeta Irabot Award, National Sahitya Akademi Award, first Ashangbam Minaketan Ningshing Mana, Tayenjam Jayenta Poetry Award etc.
He is currently teaching Manipuri at GP Women's College, Imphal.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh, a memento and a shawl.
While taking note of the various difficulties faced by the writers of Manipur such as limited market for literary works etc, Governor Gurbachan asserted that literary works such as poetry, prose, novels, short stories and drama produced by Manipuri writers are not less in quality when compared to literary works produced in other languages of India.
Recognition given by the national level literary bodies like the Sahitya Akademi is a testimony to this fact, he added.
