Imphal, December 09 2012:
The Waisel Maril which extends over 30 kms and serves as the 'drainpipe' for around 6 Assembly Constituencies of the State, is all set to be renovated by Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) at an estimated project cost of Rs 150 crores.
This was informed by an official of IFCD-II during an exercise of dredging the drainage system by the Department along with MLA of Keishamthong A/C L Ibomcha today.
The official observed that the lack of proper maintenance of Waisel Maril for the last many years has led to frequent flooding in Sagolband, Keishamthong, Naoriya Pakhang Lakpa, Nambol, Wangoi and Mayang Imphal Assembly Constituencies during monsoons every year.

To prevent frequent flooding of these areas, IFCD has ultimately come up with the initiative of renovating Waisel Maril.
Though all the MLAs of the six Assembly Constituencies have been planning for proper construction of retaining walls along the embankment of Waisel Maril, MLA Ibomcha, who was not patient enough to wait for the fund to be arranged, has contributed Rs 10 lakhs from his Local Area Development Fund with which dredging exercise of Waisel Maril has been started from today.
Excavators from IFCD are being pressed in service for the exercise.
The official further informed that dredging of Waisel Maril from its mouth at Kha Sanjenbam to its end point, which is at a distance of about 30m kms is being targeted to be completed in a month's time.
