Imphal, December 09 2012:
To highlight their plight and reassert demand for a rightful place in the society, members of Christian Network of Positive Women, All Manipur NupiManbi Association, Community network for Empowerment, Social Awareness Service Organisation, Manipur Network for Positive People, Solidarity and Action Against HIV in India (SAATHI) and Centre for Organisation Research and Education will join the global fraternity in the World Human Rights Day observance tomorrow.
Speaking to newspersons today, All Manipur bar Association (AMBA) secretary Shyam Charan said that AMBA along with the said organisations/NGOs would participate in the observance of World Human Rights day with the aim to contribute towards educating people, especially the marginalised section of the society, including children and teenagers, on the rights of these group of people.
Noting that this year the observance theme is 'Inclusion and the right to participate in life', Shyam Charan contended that these people have been marginalised and excluded by different sections of the society as well as Government machinery to such an extent that they are not allowed to participate in public events apart from denying them health and development programmes.
Functionaries of these NGOs, who also addressed the media, pointed out that the global observance is an occasion for all section of the society to realise that human rights enshrined in the charter of the United nations include everyone in the society and denounces discrimination.
They suggested that specific Government policies should be framed by consulting the groups concerned and with their prior approval for non-viable policies amount for intentionally sidelining these group of people.
It is also informed that an open discussion and panel discussion with experts on human rights along with marginalised people of the society would be organised at MDU at 11 am with the key recommendations to be submitted to authorities concerned such as National Human Rights Commission, NACO, MACS and Government of Manipur's Health and Social Welfare departments.
Moreover a radio discussion on relevant issues would be aired by AIR, Imphal at 7 pm of December 10, they added.
