Imphal, February 17, 2013:
Exhorting the people to start countering the UPA Government's economic policy which has allegedly given tremendous hardship to the common people, Lok Sabha MP and General Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Gurudas Dasgupta has appealed to the people of Manipur for full co- operation in the nationwide general strike being called by AITUC against the new economic policies of the Centre on February 20 and 21. Dasgupta was speaking at a 'Mass Rally cum Public Meeting' organized by AITUC Manipur State Unit at THAU ground at Thangmeiband here today.
He asserted that the economic policy of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre has created tremendous hardships to the common people.
"Being a policy for the rich, the poor people in the country are becoming poorer with each passing day.
Even after 62 years of independence, the people of the country continue to be deprived of their right to life, and the number of educated unemployed youths has increased manifold, he charged.
It is against these debilitating new economic policies of the UPA Government that the trade unions of various political parties in the country including that of the Congress and the BJP have joined hands to launch a nationwide general strike on February 20 and 21, Dasgupta explained, while appealing to the people of the State to support and extend cooperation so as to teach a lesson to the anti-people UPA government.
Furthermore, he informed that AITUC is trying to solve the problems besetting Manipur.
But since the agitation cannot be done in the State of Manipur lone, the general strike is being launched throughout the nation.
Today's mass rally cum public meeting was also attended by Dr M Nara, Secretary of CPI, Manipur State Unit.
It may be mentioned that among others, the demands of AITUC include control on price rise, to stop disinvestment policy in public sector and not allowing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the retail sector, etc.
Meanwhile, Women Working Forum, Manipur took out a rally in Imphal today as part of the AITUC protest.
The Forum demanded for the reviewing of the order of Anganwadi workers and helpers.
It also demanded to look into the minimum wage issue on Anganwadi workers.
