Following adoption of Kangmong village, Sadar Hills by College of Agriculture, Central Agriculture University (CAU), tumeric plants have been planted over an area of 15 hectares in Kangmong Sanjabung farm run by Nongchup Imphal Loumee Shinmee Chaokhat Thourang Lup.
Declaring Kangmong farm as adopted, CAU Associate Prof N Kunjaraj said that the idea behind adopting the farm is to inspire neighbouring villages to learn and imitate the methods of planting vegetables from the adopted farm.
The farm would also serve as a demonstration farm.
Local farmers of the area would also be taught basic techniques of cultivation at the farm, Kunjaraj said.
During the three years period of adoption, turmeric and ginger will be planted at the farm.
CAU seed expert Dr Kh Ibohal said that Lakadong variety of turmeric will be planted for the first time on foothills.
The Nongchup Imphal Loumee Shinmee Chaokhat Thourang Lup said that their objective is to make Manipur self-reliant in food also to improve economic condition of the people.
They also urged upon the Government to constitute a committee in order to fix prices of agricultural produces and also to formulate a sound agricultural policy.
