Imphal, January 15, 2011:
The order placing Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) under suspension is likely to be revoked.
The government, on August 10 last year, had placed the 27 member IMC under suspension for financial irregularities, abuse of power, maladministration and a staggering financial loss of Rs.19.30 lakh a month.
This was based on an enquiry report by a committee constituted by the government.
A municipal council cannot be placed under suspension for more than six months and suspension period was due to expire on February 8, 2011. On the other hand, the present five-year term of the IMC is due to expire by June.
Government is considering holding election to the 27 wards of the council in May and preparation for the same has started, the source said.
After the suspension of the IMC, affairs of the council are being looked after by its Chief Executive Officer, W Bhaktaraj and MAHUD Director Nepram Geetkumar.
In the meantime, the IMC authority is most likely to allot seats for vendor run rice hotels in the three new market complexes.
The authority is considering seat arrangements for them, the source said.
The authority is not likely to give seats to hotel owners known for unsanitary habits.
Seats at the upper floor of the multi-storey market-sheds are being considered for allotment to "rice hotel" vendors.
Opening of restaurants at the floor was also a plan for the IMC, the source said.
There are around 75 vendors possessing IMC licenses for running hotels.
Rice for them are being supplied by stall owners from the erstwhile old Khwairamband Keithel.
