Vehicle torched, passenger stoned in NH 39 bandh

Imphal, January 15, 2011:
A passenger was stoned by NH 39 bandh supporters and a vehicle was torched to take the vehicle damage toll to two since the commencement of the 48-hour that began yesterday 6.30 pm.
Kakwa residents of the JAC formed in connection with the killing of Naorem Kunjabihari, chairman of BSEM on January 11 had imposed the bandh on NH 39. The dead body of the chairman is still lying at the RIMS morgue.
A Tata Magic, MN04A-3091 was set afire by bandh supporters at Pal Ahanbi (Langthabal Kunja) at 10.10 am today.
The ill-fated vehicle was heading to Khongjom.
Bandh supporters torched the vehicle after asking the passengers to step out, a report said.
They beat up the driver, Laishram Tomba (30) son of Yaima of Khongjom Chingdam Leikai, for violating the bandh before burning down the vehicle.
After torching the vehicle, bandh supporters left the place immediately.
Fire fighters rushed to douse the fire.
The burnt vehicle belonging to Md Nurahman son of Md Amuba has been recovered by the Singjamei police and kept in its campus.
A passenger coming on an auto-rickshaw was also hurt when protestors pelted stones at the auto-rickshaw coming from Mayang Imphal towards Lilong.
The injured passenger was admitted to the RIMS Hospital, reports said.
Yesterday a Maurti Van (MN04A-0490) had been burnt by bandh supporters at around 7.30 pm.
Singjamei police have picked up eight bandh supporters.
Six of them were picked up last night while another two were aressted today.
One of them, however, claimed he had gone out to buy medicines.
To resume normal traffic police dispersed bandh supporters at Kakwa Naorem Leikai.
However, bandh supporters used catapults to enforce the bandh which resulted in the firing of tear gas and smoke bombs.
