Imphal, March 14 2011:
Amidst contradictory claims, a youth was found dead inside a community pond at Khurai Konsam Leikai today.
A police source informed that Yendrembam Naoba alias Hao (17) s/o Bankimchandra of Khurai Kongpal Laishram Leikai was found dead inside the pond at about 8.46 am today.
The corpse has been taken to JNIMS for autopsy.
While one party claimed that Naoba drowned as he accidentally fell into the pond while trying to escape the wrath of the people after he was caught stealing, another party has been contending that Naoba was killed first and the body thrown into the pond later.
Information received from the spot said that Naoba was caught while burgling a stationery cum mobile phone recharge voucher shop owned by Ngangkham Brajamohan (40) at about 10.30 pm yesterday.
Soon some people started beating Naoba.
Escaping from his captors, Naoba jumped into the pond but he was found dead this morning.
On the other, Naoba's distant family brother Yendrembam Brojendro claimed that Naoba was called out by some individuals at about 10.30 last night.
Then he was assaulted severely and pushed him into the pond.
About a week back, Ngangkham brothersRanjit, Brajamohon and Loken came asking for Naoba because Naoba once asked Raghu's daughter her mobile phone number, Brojendro said.
Raghu is said to be the eldest brother of Ranjit, Brajamohon and Loken.
Contending that Naoba's case was not drowning but murder, Brajamohon demanding fitting actions should be initiated against the three Ngangkham brothers.
Meanwhile, a large number of people belonging to Khurai Kongpal Laishram Leikai tried to storm the Ngangkham colony this afternoon but they were pushed back by Imphal East police using tear gas shells and mock bombs.
The crow asserted that Naoba was killed by Ngangkham families and that the culprits should be booked.
