A person, who escaped from a crowd which was beating him for stealing goods from a shop, was found dead this morning in a pond into which he had jumped last night.
The incident occurred at Khurai Konsam Leikai under Porompat PS and the deceased man was identified as Yendrembam Naoba (22) of Kongpal Laishram Leikai.
His dead body was retrieved by the Imphal Fire Service.
He was caught by the locals of Khurai Konsam Leikai last night around 10.30 pm while he was allegedly looting a stationery cum re-charge voucher selling shop.
He had been missing after he jumped into a pond when locals started assaulting him.
He had a record of looting shops two times earlier, locals said.
Alleging that Naoba was thrown into the pond after being killed by the crowd, locals of Kongpal Laishram Leikai where the deceased hailed from marched toward Khurai Konsam Leikai with an intention of attacking the shop related with the death of Naoba.
Porompat PS rushed to the area and fired several rounds of tear gas and other mob dispersion ammunitions to quell the mob.
