Under the Integrated Conservation and Development of Loktak Lake Project, five lakhs of fingerlings were released in the Loktak lake today by the Loktak Development Authority.
Under the project sponsored by the North Eastern Council, the Loktak Development Authority is all set to take up other Loktak conservation activities like fish re-stocking, removal of phoomdis, economic utilization of phoomdis to replace chemical fertilizers etc.Out of these proposed activities, regeneration of fish population in the lake by releasing fingerlings was taken up on priority basis.
Fingerlings were released today for the third time under the project.
On earlier occasions, five lakhs fingerlings were released each at Thanga Ithing and Ninghtoukhong canal, informed the Director of LDA Ch Gojendra.
Fingerlings released today belong to common carf families, rou and mrigals, said the Director while conveying that the LDA is also preparing to rear local varieties like Pengbas in the lake starting from the next phase.
He further mentioned that the Thanga Hatchery Centre also contributed a lot in today's fingerling release programme.
